This online professional development workshop for social studies teachers will use the eight United Nation Millennium Development Goals as a framework to review the present situation in Eastern Europe. The primary instructor is Dr. Dean Shankle, who is currently a Fulbright Scholar in Moldova, one of the Eastern European countries the course will cover.

Course Objectives

This course will enable participants to do the following:

  • Demonstrate an enhanced knowledge and understanding of the role of the UN Millennial Development Goals in the changes taking place in Eastern Europe
  • Identify how the Goals are impacting and shaping global relationships
  • Identify how the Goals are impacting US relationships with Eastern Europe
  • Use the knowledge gained in a social studies curriculum

Course Requirements

Participants taking the course for a certificate of 40 hours professional development will be expected to:

  • Do the course readings
  • Complete five quizzes based on the course readings
  • Participate in the course forums by posting at least six substantive posts each week

Participants taking the course for 3 graduate credits from San Diego University will be expected to:

  • Do the course readings
  • Complete five quizzes based on the course readings
  • Participate in the course forums by posting at least six substantive posts each week
  • Write a final paper of no fewer than 3,000 words OR write a final paper of no fewer than 2,500 word and create an executive summary PowerPoint presentation of no more than 25 slides.
